Operating RailKing RTR Sets With Conventional Analog Power
Virtually any AC or DC traditional transformer can run your Proto-Sound 3.0 train set providing speed, direction and basic locomotive sounds. AC transformers with whistle and bell controls can access additional features whistle and horn effects, bell sounds, coupler operation and much more.
Conventional or analog operation differs from command control by controlling the locomotive with changes in track voltage. Unlike command control, conventional control affects all locomotives the same way, even if the locomotive has a command control decoder (like Proto-Sound 3.0) installed because no command control digital signal is outputted. As a result, it's not possible to reliably control multiple locomotives on the same track at the same time when running in conventional mode.
The good news is that when using a AC conventional transformer configured with bell and whistle/horn buttons, like those featured on the left, users can still access a limited number of locomotive features through a series of bell and whistle/horn button push combinations. In addition to the standard bell and whistle/horn commands, users can trigger couplers to open, Proto-Freight and Proto-Passenger effects to play and engine direction lockout to occur through a series of bell and whistle/horn button pushes. The conventional features are explained in the PDF document below.
