2017 Blue Comet Award

To help popularize O gauge model railroading, M.T.H. established in 2010 the Blue Comet Award, to be given annually to the person or organization who does the most to promote the O gauge hobby to the general public.

Rules for entering the sixth annual Blue Comet competition, with the winner to be announced by May 31, 2017 and honored at the October 2017 York TCA meet, are detailed below. Past winners and runners up are invited to compete again.

We want to stress that, while large layouts can inspire future hobbyists, smaller layouts with lots of action and perhaps operating accessories — displayed and staffed in a high-traffic area like a museum or shopping mall — can be equally effective in attracting new model railroaders, by helping them think, “Yes, I could do that!”

2017 Blue Comet Award Features A Travelling Locomotive And Caboose

For 2017, we’re bringing back the Blue Comet Award — our annual award to the person or organization who does the most to promote the O Gauge hobby to the general public — for its sixth season, and introducing a new tradition: a Blue Comet Award Train that the winner will operate for one year, before passing it on to the next year’s winner (in the same manner as hockey’s Stanley Cup).

We’re also holding a contest to design the paint scheme for the Blue Comet engine, a RailKing ES44AC GEVO hybrid diesel with flashing charging lights, and the caboose, a RailKing steel caboose. Each year’s Blue Comet Award winner will also receive their own personalized award boxcar.

Design the Blue Comet Award Engine and Caboose!

For the sixth season of the Blue Comet Award, we’re introducing a new tradition: a Blue Comet Award Train that the winner will operate for one year, before passing it on to the next year’s winner (in the same manner as hockey’s Stanley Cup). And one of you will get to design the train: a RailKing ES44AC GEVO hybrid diesel with flashing charging lights, and a RailKing steel caboose.

Artistic talent will not be a factor in judging the design contest. You can submit a written description of your idea and/or you can submit sketches, using the printable loco and caboose drawings below.

Submission deadline for design entries is February 28, 2017.
