The Trainmaster, a name synonymous with model railroading and easily one of the most famous diesel locomotives ever to run the rails, began its life during World War II in Fairbanks Morse's Wisconsin shops. However, production was delayed for several years when first wartime submarine production then other projects intervened. Fairbanks Morse saw an opportunity in the changing railroad market of the early 1950's, and the Trainmaster with its massive 2,400 horsepower opposed-piston engine burst upon the railroad world in 1953. The Trainmaster took the Railroad Manufacturers' Supply Association show where it premiered by storm. It racked up 32 orders for its first year of production. Ultimately 105 Trainmasters were sold to eight US railroads and another 22 engines were sold in Canada. Featuring an all-metal chassis and two powerful, flywheel equipped motors, the M.T.H. Trainmaster is capable of pulling almost any consist. We offer the Trainmaster in the markings of a host of railroads: Chessie, Jersey Central, Lackawanna, Pennsylvania, Santa Fe, Southern, and Union Pacific. Did You Know?
