Overview

An Unpowered Unit for Realistic Double-Heading! EMD, famous for its successful manufacture of quality locomotives, hit the target once again when the company introduced the SW-1500 on January 1, 1966. The SW-1500, like the parallel produced SW-1000, housed EMD's newly released 12-cylinder, 645E engine. The SW-1500 outdid and outsold the SW-1000. EMD sold over 800 of the units. The locomotive's standard equipment was that expected for a yard switcher, but the optional equipment which included a larger fuel tank, better quality trucks and ballasting to add weight suggest that EMD expected the SW1500 to be used as a true road switcher, and many mainlines did just that. Indeed, these diesels were used by mainline operators, but industrial users such as Armco Steel used them as well. The RailKing SW-1500 is sure to be an eye-catching addition to your own model railroad. Put it to work in the yard, or let it show its worth on the mainline! It's all up to you. M.T.H. is offering this handy loco in a variety of roadnames for fun and versatility. Choose from AK Steel, Armco Steel, CSX, Great Northern, Southern and even EMD Demonstrator paint schemes. Did You Know? The higher cab profile on the SW-1000 caused clearance problems for EMD's industrial customers, so the SW-1001 was released to correct the problem. The SW-1500 also had industrial users, EMD received no requests for a lower cab version of this locomotive.
