UP owned 550 Consolidations, dating from as early as 1868 until they were superseded in production orders by the 2-8-2 Mikados (or MacArthurs, as UP named the class) shortly after 1910. Even after being replaced on mainline freight service, the Consolidations were still so hard-working they took up branchline, local way freight, and occasional switching duties.
