The Southern Pacific and the state of California grew up together. Founded in 1865 by a group of San Francisco businessmen, the railroad eventually stretched over 13,000 miles, connecting the Golden State with Portland to the north and points east as far as New Orleans, Kansas City and Chicago. The Espee, as it was often called, was known for innovation and larger-than-life projects, from some of the earliest shipments of California fruit to the rest of the nation, to its Daylight passenger trains along the Pacific coastline and its crossings of some of our country’s toughest mountain ranges.

Recreate the excitement of steam era railroading in the Southwest, with this freight set named after Southern Pacific’s famed Overnight service. Long before FedEx existed, it provided overnight business deliveries between San Francisco and Los Angeles, carrying everything from groceries to replacement car engines. Leading this set is a rugged 2-8-0 steam locomotive with puffing smoke and chuff sounds synchronized to the drive wheel revolutions; Proto-Speed Control for smooth and steady speeds from a crawl to full throttle; LED headlight to light up the night; and a full range of sounds from wailing whistle and clanging bell to squealing brakes and crew conversations.
