Overview

By the end of the `60s, passenger service via railroad was at low ebb. Threatened by the growing popularity of other methods of transport, such as airplanes, and faced with a growing expense to maintain standards of quality, some railroads were abandoning the idea of passenger service. Yet, the U.S. government sought to revive the mode of transportation and through the principles of the High Speed Ground Transportation Act of 1965, the Metroliner was born. The Metroliner had a motor that powered every axle. When it officially emerged in the `70s, the electric engine could complete the New York to Washington run in a little under three hours. Through its passenger loads on Metroliners, Amtrak proved in two years that there was still a demand for passenger service. Metroliners still blaze along Amtrak's routes at a top speed of 125 miles per hour. Until the introduction of the Acela, Metroliners were the fastest trains in North America. The M.T.H. Premier line presents our fine 4-car reproduction of the Metroliner in Amtrak and Pennsylvania roadnames. With two precision flywheel-equipped motors, these 1:48 scale Metroliners boast sheer power and realism. Fact Box: Amtrak gets its name from a combination of the words American and Track. National Railroad Passenger Corporation is the railroad's official name.
