Pennsylvania O Scale Premier L-5 Electric with Proto-Sound 2.0

Perhaps one of the weirdest looking locomotives to ever ride the rails, Pennsylvania's L5 Electric represented the company's last use of the unique "jackshaft" design and did its best to combine two-unit power - like that found in the DD-1 - into a single unit locomotive. 24 L5s were produced and big things were expected of the gangly side-rodders as the electrification of the Pennsylvania continued at a fevered pitch during the 1920s and 30s. Configured for both passenger and freight duties, the L5 could run on AC or DC power and utilized a number of different pantograph designs and positions. Unfortunately, like other large side-rodders, the L5 proved excellent for short tunnel operations but fell short for heavy long distance work. Following on M.T.H.'s tradition of recreating railroading's history of unusual engines, the L5 is sure to attract attention on anyone's layout!
