In 1923, ending more than twenty years without adding any new 4-6-0s to the roster, Pennsy had its Juniata shops build the G5s Ten-Wheelers. With 205 pounds of boiler pressure and 41,330 pounds of tractive effort, the G5s was the most powerful class of Ten-Wheelers ever built, and by 1929 it was the only 4-6-0 remaining in active service on the PRR, where it was used on many local and suburban lines. With only 68" drivers, unusually small for an engine in passenger service, the G5s was designed more for power than for speed. The 121 G5s built in Juniata in the 1920s, 31 of which were built specifically for service on the Long Island division, were workhorses on the Long Island lines commuter service for many years.
