September 9, 2009 - M.T.H.'s RailKing Scale FP45 diesel locomotive will be arriving at M.T.H. Authorized Retailer locations in the next week.
Check out the FP45 in Taylor's Product Update VIDEO.
Last promoted in our 2009 Volume 1 catalog, the FP45 was designed in 1967 at the request of the Santa Fe. The locomotive was basically an SDP45 road switcher with a streamlined cab unit body. The "P" in FP45 indicated a passenger diesel with a steam generator for train heat.
Having a sleeker, more aerodynamic look than a road switcher, the FP45 blended better with its passenger consists; the fully enclosed body also reduced wind resistance and allowed the crew to perform troubleshooting and minor maintenance on the road.
Purchased for passenger service by the Santa Fe and the Milwaukee Road, the 3600 hp FP45s replaced first-generation E-unit and F-unit diesel sets and eventually found themselves handling freight duties as well. By 1971, the units remaining in passenger service were working exclusively for Amtrak. A sister engine, the F45, was bought for freight-only service by the Santa Fe, Great Northern, and Burlington Northern.
Under the hood is the same ProtoSound 2.0 system found in our more expensive Premier version of this locomotive, complete with sounds recorded from an actual real life prototype. If you're looking for realism and a lot of fun at a RailKing price, it doesn't get any better than this!
Having first appeared in the M.T.H. Premier Line in 1997, the FP45 joined the RailKing Scale diesel lineup in 2005. Built to 1/48 scale proportions and outfitted with Proto-Sound 2.0, the FP45 includes all the features that make RailKing Scale locomotives one of the best values in model railroading.
As with most new MTH diesels, the FP45 features MTHﾒs incredible speed control technology. Throttle down as low as three scale miles per hour to muscle a heavy cut of cars around your terminal or out on the road ﾗ and maintain that speed as long as you wish, thanks to the mircoprocessorﾒs control over the twin flywheel equipped motors.
Listen to the authentic chant of an EMD prime mover. Pick up and drop off cars wherever you like, with remotely activated front and rear Proto-Couplers. And thanks to Proto-Sound 2.0 technology, you can mix FP45s together in lashups with other diesels, just like the prototype did. No one else offers an FP45 with so much versatility, detail, and performance at a RailKing price.
